Iβm Holly, a Brooklyn-based creator focused on play and learning.
I design intuitive experiences for curious minds at any age. Kids products are close to my heart, but Iβve recently taken the plunge into designing for adults too (!).
π I moved to New York with a B.F.A. in Communication Design from Washington University in St. Louis to work in childrenβs publishing. For a few years, I freelanced for various print and digital publishers, designing calendars, book mockups, and digital magazine layouts.
π While searching for a way to combine my talents for illustration, design, and animation under one colorful umbrella, I discovered the world of kids educational apps. I got my start at Tinybop, an award-winning educational tech startup. Here, I helped design and launch a library of 16 award-winning app titles distributed around the world in 40+ languages. This small team allowed me to see apps built from start to finish, affording me skills in technical art, digital illustration, animation, art direction, UI, and UX for interactive learning. Next, I moved on to HOMER Learning, where I was the first designer tasked with building a multi-subject educational app for kids 2-8. Here, I established our design team processes, built the visual product language for a new brand, and transformed into a shameless Figma stan.
ποΈ Most recently, I joined the New York Times to design a delightful new experience for kids age 8-14 looking to learn about a variety of topics and identify their passions. This product is currently on pause, but you can still check out the @nytkids instagram - you wonβt regret it!
I am now taking the plunge into design for adults (!) - Iβm currently designing layouts and interactions for the New York Times digital homepage (web + app).
What else am I learning right now? All things RISO art-making and printing. I love how bright RISO inks are, and how accessible the printing method is for artists. Iβd love to create more printed matter and illustrate a zine or booklet of sorts to share with the world - keep an eye out π
